Overoptimistic doctors sometimes ignore or misread signs of complications that may follow surgery. As a result, the patient develops a physical problem that could have been caught and adequately treated with a little more attention during the early postoperative phase of treatment.

Surgeons often use what is known as “vogue therapy,” or surgical procedures that are in vogue or fashionable at the moment. These procedures may have been developed quite recently, and glamour or prestige may be attached to using them. In other words, there’s the tendency to “go for the headlines” in surgery as well as in many other pursuits in life.
